How deep to plant a Cannabis Seed

How deep to plant a Cannabis Seed

You made a hole with your first knuckle, dropped the bean, and tamped it like a fence post. Three days later nothing. You dig. The seed is two centimetres down in a mud pie. That is not a mystery. How deep to plant a cannabis seed is a small number. For a home cup of light mix, plant about half a centimetre to one centimetre deep. That is roughly a quarter inch to half an inch. A centimetre is a simple target. Not two inches. Not a third of the pot. Not your big knuckle. Get that hole right and most fresh beans will do the rest if the mix stays warm and barely moist.

This page is the hole. How the seed wakes up is cannabis seed germination. How long the hook takes to break is how long germinated seeds take to break the surface. After it is up: seedling stage and seedlings day by day.

How deep to plant a cannabis seed

Make a small hole. Drop the seed. Cover it loose. Keep the mix barely moist and warm. That is the whole job. In a light seed-starting mix, most growers land between 6 and 13 millimetres. Call it ¼ to ½ inch. If you want one number you can remember when you are tired, use about 1 centimetre. How deep to plant a marijuana seed is the same number. How deep to plant a weed seed is the same number. The plant does not care which word you used in the search box.

The seed has a lunchbox inside it. That lunch has to last until the hook finds light and the first leaves can eat. Too much dirt on top and lunch runs out in the dark. Too little dirt and the seed dries, or it drags the shell up like a helmet. You want a thin blanket, not a basement. Think of it like tucking in a pea, not burying a potato. A cannabis seed is closer to a pepper seed than a runner bean. Small seed. Small cover. That one idea will save more beans than any fancy gel or heat gadget.

Garden packets often say plant a seed two to three times as deep as the seed is wide. A cannabis seed is about 3 to 5 millimetres long. Two to three times that is 6 to 15 millimetres. That is the same ½ to 1 centimetre band, just said the old way. However, do not treat a fat seed like a bigger hole. A chunky bean and a small one still want that thin cover. Size differences between strains are minor. You are not planting a walnut.

Why depth matters

Seeds need water and air at the same time. Water starts the soak. Oxygen keeps the embryo alive. A deep, wet, packed hole is a drowning. A shallow, dusty hole is a desert. Depth is how you sit between those two. The mix matters as much as the ruler. Airy peat or coco with perlite can take the deeper end of that ½–1 cm band. Heavy garden dirt that crusts wants the shallow end. A rockwool cube is not a bucket. You are placing the seed in the cube, not burying the cube under more mix.

Too shallow

If you can still see the seed after you “plant” it, it is too shallow. The top of a cup dries first. A bare bean cooks under a tent light. It can also pop up and carry the hull on the cotyledons. That helmet can pinch the first leaves. Sometimes a drop of water and patience pops it off. Sometimes you help. Do not rip. Wait until the shell is soft and the leaves are trying to open. A wet cotton swab can ease it. If you tear a cotyledon, the plant can still live. If you rip the growing tip, you are done. Hull help: marijuana seed hull stuck on cotyledons.

Shallow plus a fan is another trap. You dried the top on purpose to “prevent mould,” and the seed sat in dust. A dome or a bag for two days is kinder than a gale. Once the hook is up, you can give air. Not before.

Too deep

Two centimetres is already a lot in a starter cup. Three is a grave. The seedling spends its lunch climbing. It may rot. It may damp off. It may come up pale and stretched, then flop. People do this because they treat a cannabis seed like a bean in the garden. A cannabis seed is small. Small seed, small hole. Do not scale the hole to a 20 litre pot. A tall pot does not want a 6 centimetre burial. The seed still wants about a centimetre of cover. The extra depth of the pot is for roots later, not for the first night.

Your first knuckle is a bad ruler. That is often 2 centimetres or more. A pencil tip, a chopstick, or the end of your pinky is closer. Poke, drop, brush the mix closed. Do not tamp. A light mist settles the gap. A fist packs a lid the hook cannot punch.

Look, some pages still say plant the seed one-third of the way down the pot. That rule is for moving a rooted plant, not for a seed. In a 12 inch pot, one-third is 4 inches. A cannabis seed will never spend that climb and live. Depth does not grow with the container. The pot can be a solo cup or a 19 litre fabric bag. The hole stays about a centimetre. If you read “one-third the pot,” ignore it for seeds.

Dry seed vs germinated seed

A dry seed and a cracked seed are not the same job. A dry seed can sit about 1 centimetre down in pre-moist mix and wake in the dark. You will not see the taproot. You wait. A germinated seed already has a white root. That root is living. It hates fingers, dry air, and a deep tunnel. Plant it sooner, shallower, taproot down. The shell sits just under the surface. The root hangs into a narrow hole. Do not bury the whole taproot length as if the seed belongs at the bottom of the root.

Paper towel, then plant

Paper towel is a spy hole. You see the root. You also get a transplant. Move when the taproot is a few millimetres, not a long worm. Hold the shell. Do not pinch the white. Have the cup ready before you open the towel. A long root in a towel dries, sticks, and snaps. Then you planted a dead bean at the perfect depth. That is still a dead bean. Germ methods: cannabis seed germination.

Direct soil skips the move. You cannot see the root. If nothing shows in 7 to 10 days, you may have a dud, a swamp, or a burial. Dig gently. Do not excavate the whole cup on day three. Most fresh seeds push a hook in 1 to 4 days after they are planted at the right depth. Plenty take 2 to 7. Past 14, you are usually looking at a dead seed or a hole that was too deep and too wet. Timing: break the surface. Old beans: signs your cannabis seeds have gone stale.

Soaking first is optional, not a law. Twelve to twenty-four hours in plain water can wake a stubborn seed. Overnight is enough for most fresh ones. Do not leave it swimming for three days. Do not soak it in bloom tea, molasses, or “root booster.” The lunch is already in the seed. After the soak, plant at the same shallow depth. If it cracked in the glass, treat it like a towel seed: taproot down, shell just under the mix.

How to make the hole

Pre-moisten the mix so it feels like a wrung sponge. Not dust. Not soup. If you plant into dry mix and then flood, you can wash the seed deeper than you meant and leave a soggy pocket with no air. Make the hole with a pencil. About a centimetre. Wide enough to drop the seed, not a well. Place the seed. If you see a taproot, point it down. If you have a dry seed, sideways is fine. Gravity still tells the root which way is down. It costs a little energy if you plant it “upside down.” It is not a death sentence. Depth and moisture kill more seeds than orientation.

Brush mix over the hole. Do not press a thumbprint lid. A couple of light drops of water settle contact. Then leave it. Warm root zone, about 21 to 26 C if you can. Dark until it pops, then light. A dome can help if your room is dry. A dome on a swamp cup is mould. Lift it if the walls are raining.

A simple sequence you can repeat. Fill the cup loose. Water it, wait a minute, drain. Poke. Drop. Cover. Mist. Label the cup with the date and “1 cm” so you are not guessing next week. Set it somewhere warm. Walk away. Checking every hour does not help. You are not hatching an egg you can turn. You are waiting for a hook.

Mix, moisture, and pots

Light mix. Drainage holes. One seed per cup. Packed peat that never dries is a coffin at any depth. Water the dirt, then wait until the cup is light. A heavy cup is still wet. More water will not make a deep seed “find” the air. Watering: water cannabis plants. After it is up, the seedling still wants that same light mix. Do not start in hot garden manure. Do not start in last year’s salty pot.

Regular bagged potting soil is often too rich and too dense for a seed. Seed-starting mix is finer and milder. If all you have is potting soil, cut it with perlite so air can move. Still plant shallow. A “living soil” super soil that feeds a flowering plant will burn a baby. Save the hot mix for later. The first week is water, air, and warmth, not food.

One seed per hole. Two beans “just in case” means you will have to kill one, or they will fight for the same cup. If you want a spare, use a spare cup. A 16 ounce solo cup with a hole in the bottom is a fine start for a photoperiod. An auto often wants the finish pot from day one. Either way, one seed. Label it. You will not remember which cup was the knuckle test.

Autos vs photoperiod pots

The hole is still about a centimetre even in a 19 litre fabric pot. The pot size is a different question. Do not poke a well in the middle of a big pot. Make a dimple at the surface. That photo of a tunnel in coco is the mistake, not the method. Autos run on a clock. A late transplant eats days they will not give back. Many growers plant the auto in the finish pot from day one. The seed still sits near the surface. Photoperiods can start in a small cup and move later. They wait for your 12/12. They can forgive a transplant. They cannot forgive a 5 centimetre burial either. Auto clock: how do autoflower seeds work. Auto grow: grow autoflowering cannabis plants.

Feminized photoperiod seeds and regular seeds want the same hole. The sex of the plant is not a depth question. Autoflower seeds want the same hole too. What changes is the pot you pick, not the centimetre of cover. Do not plant an auto deeper “because it is faster.” Faster is the clock, not a deeper grave.

How deep to plant a marijuana seed outdoors

Outdoors the surface dries in wind and crusts after rain. You can go a little deeper in a fluffy, prepared bed, still inside about 1 to 2 centimetres, not a furrow. In heavy clay that seals, stay shallow and keep the surface from turning into pottery. A cloche or a cut bottle can hold moisture for a week. Direct sow only when nights hold. A cold, wet hole at 3 centimetres is how a weed seed disappears. Birds and slugs also eat shallow seeds. A light cover of mix is still better than a board of dirt. If you can start in a cup and transplant a photoperiod after last frost, do that. The hole in the cup is still a centimetre.

Night temps matter more than your calendar. If nights still drop near 10 C, the seed sits and sulks, then rots. Wait until nights stay around 13 C or warmer before you direct sow. A seedling you started inside still needs a harden-off week before full sun. A non-hardened baby can burn in an hour. Direct sow is for when the ground is actually ready, not when you are impatient.

Follow the law where you live. Adults in most of Canada can run four plants per household. Quebec and Manitoba restrict home grow. Seeds are not a permission slip. Buy cannabis seeds in Canada has the country map. Shop packs in the store.

A real outdoor miss looks like this. You rake a bed, poke your thumb in to the first knuckle, drop four seeds because you have four legal holes, water with a hose, and a crust forms by noon. The seeds sit in a sealed wet layer with no air, or they sit dry under a cap. Either way you get nothing. Fix: fluff a small pocket, 1 centimetre, bottle cloche, mist not a hose, wait for night temps. If slugs are a problem, start in a cup on a table and transplant the photoperiod later. The hole in the cup is still not a knuckle.

Coco, pellets, and rockwool

A jiffy pellet is already a small world. Expand it, squeeze the extra water, make a tiny dimple, drop the seed, pinch the peat closed without crushing. Do not stack a centimetre of extra mix on top of the pellet. Do not mash it into a wet cookie with your thumb. Rockwool: soak, drain, pH, small hole, seed in the cube, not under a pyramid. Coco in a cup behaves like a light mix. Stay in that ¼–½ inch band. Fine coco can crust. Keep it loose. Hydro later is a different chapter. The seed still wants a shallow start. Tent: grow tent for cannabis seeds.

pH at this stage is “not crazy,” not a lab hobby. Soil around 6.0 to 6.5 is friendly. Coco and rockwool like it a bit lower. If your tap water is wild, let it sit or use a simple filter. Do not soak a seed in nutrient tea. The lunch is in the seed. Food comes after true leaves. A drop of mild root tea is optional. A bottle of bloom in the hole is how you burn a baby.

Temperature does more than people admit. Cold mix sits and sulks. The seed drinks slow. You think you planted too deep because day five is blank. Warm the cup, not the whole house. A seedling heat mat on low under a tray can help. Do not cook the roots. If the plastic cup is hot to the touch, you went too far. Most home germs like that 21–26 C band. Over 30 C in wet mix is rot weather.

Specs, pros, and cons

Specs you can actually use

  • Home cup, light mix: 0.5–1 cm (about ¼–½ inch). Simple target: ~1 cm.
  • Pre-germinated seed: seed body just under the surface, taproot down, often 0.5–1 cm of cover on the shell.
  • Outdoor fluffy bed: still about 1–2 cm, shallow end if the soil crusts.
  • Too deep in a cup: past ~2 cm without a good reason.
  • Root zone: barely moist, warm, often 21–26 C.
  • Hook through: often 1–4 days after a right-depth plant, 2–7 common, 14 usually dead or buried.
  • Garden rule check: 2–3× seed width still lands in that same centimetre band.

Pros of getting depth right

  • Moisture stays on the seed without a swamp.
  • The hook can punch through before lunch runs out.
  • Less helmet. Less rot. Less “I planted it, nothing happened.”
  • You can repeat the same hole next pack instead of guessing.

Cons of guessing

  • Knuckle-deep holes drown or starve the seedling.
  • Bare seeds dry or wear the shell as a hat.
  • Deep plus wet is damping-off weather.
  • A perfect hole will not save a stale bean.
  • A 4 inch hole in a tall pot wastes a seed you cannot get back.

Direct soil vs paper towel, in one breath. Direct soil: less handling, less snapped roots, you cannot see the fail until later. Paper towel: you see the root, you can skip duds, you can break the root on the move. Neither method wants a deep hole. The towel people plant too deep because they think a long taproot needs a long tunnel. It does not. The root will grow down from a shallow shell. The shell wants to be near air and a little moisture. That is the whole geometry.

If you already buried a seed too deep and it has not been a week, you can sometimes rescue it. Scoop from the side, lift the seed with a spoon, reset it at a centimetre in fresh loose mix. If the taproot snapped, you are done. If it is mush, you are done. If it is still hard and white-rooted, try once. Do not keep digging every morning. The seedling does not like being a science project.

Mistakes that waste a seed

Using your first knuckle as a ruler. Planting one-third of the way down a tall pot. Tamping the mix. Flooding dry mix after the drop so the seed sinks. Leaving a cracked seed in a towel until the root is 3 centimetres long, then stuffing it in a deep hole. Covering a jiffy with a fist of dirt. Outdoor sowing in cold mud. Checking every hour and digging the seed up. More water because “it has not come up.” Light on a seed that is still buried and does not need a 100 watt blast yet. Starting ten beans because four legal holes feel lonely.

Damping-off is the wet, cold, deep combo. The stem pinches at the soil line and the baby folds. You cannot spray it back to life. Fix the hole, the water, and the air before you plant the next one. A pale stretched seedling with roots showing at the surface was planted deep in soup, then the mix slumped. Do not bury that stem to “hide” it. That stem will rot. Raise the lamp. Let the stem green up. Seedling care: cannabis seedling stage.

Look, poke a centimetre, drop the bean, brush it shut, and walk away. If the cup is heavy, wait. If the room is cold, warm the root, not the overhead LED. If nothing shows, wait more than a day. Then check. Then, if you must, dig. Shop the next pack in the cannabis seeds store after you know the hole was not the problem.

A first-week picture that does not waste a seed: day 0, mix is moist, hole is a centimetre, seed is in, room is warm. Day 1, do nothing. Day 2, the cup is still light-damp, still do nothing unless the top is bone dust, then a mist. Day 3 to 5, a hook is normal. Day 6 to 10, still possible, especially with old or cold beans. Day 14, you can dig. If the seed is mush, it drowned. If it is hard and dry, the mix was a desert or the bean was dead. If it is two centimetres down, you planted a well. Write the depth you used so the next cup is not a guess.

Light after the hook should be close and gentle, not a blast from the far side of the tent. Stretching is a light problem, not a “needs a deeper replant” problem. Do not bury a tall seedling to hide the stem. That stem will rot in wet mix. Fix the lamp.

How deep to plant a cannabis seed FAQ

How deep to plant a cannabis seed?

About 0.5–1 cm in a light mix. A centimetre is a good default. Same answer for how deep to plant a marijuana seed or a weed seed.

Pointy end up or down?

If you have a taproot, point the root down. If you have a dry seed, depth and moisture matter more. The root will find down. The taproot usually comes from the pointed end, so pointy-down is a nice habit. It is not worth stressing a dry seed with tweezers to “get it perfect.”

Should you press the soil after planting?

Only enough to close the gap. No tamping. No hard cap.

Water right after planting?

Pre-moisten first. After the drop, a light mist is enough. Do not flood a dry cup and wash the seed to the bottom.

How long until it breaks the surface?

Often 1–4 days after a planted germinated seed, 2–7 for many dry seeds in a cup. Ten happens. Fourteen is usually a problem. Full timing: break the surface.

Do autos plant deeper?

No. Same shallow hole. Bigger pot maybe. Same centimetre of cover. The clock starts when the seed wakes, so do not stall it in a towel. A deep auto hole plus a late transplant is how you harvest a tiny Christmas tree.

Can you plant a weed seed straight outside?

You can after nights hold. Survival is worse than a cup. Still a shallow hole. A bottle cloche helps. Law still applies.

Do you have to cover the seed?

Yes. A cannabis seed is not a lettuce seed that wants light on a bare surface. A thin cover holds moisture and gives the hook something to push against so the shell can slip off. Cover it. Just do not bury it.

Do you need a heat mat?

No. You need a warm root zone. A mat on low under a tray helps a cold room. A hot cup on a high mat cooks the seed. Aim for that 21–26 C feel, not a radiator.

You know the number now. About a centimetre. Loose mix. Barely moist. Taproot down if you can see it. Then leave the cup alone. After the hook, the next jobs are light and water, not a deeper hole. If the first cup fails, change one thing: depth, wetness, or heat. Do not change all three or you will not know what worked. Seedling care: seedling stage. Then veg: cannabis vegetative stage.
